Six Moon Designs (SMD) is a company out of Beaverton, Oregon, whose goal is to provide lightweight, high quality, affordable backpacking equipment. The DayBreaker specifically, was created to be a clean and simple pack used for day hiking, but with the added versatility for international travel, days around town, weekend adventure bagging peaks in the mountains, or a week long hut-to-hut hike. The pack was designed with the adventurer in mind, and with some unique features and details it has quickly become my go-to!

Build, Design and Functionality
The Body of this pack is made from waterproof 210 D Nylon Robic, and the pockets made out of 4-way stretch. The material feels thick and durable, but still lightweight and minimalist. So far the DayBreaker has stood up to pokes and scrapes from sticks and rocks, glissading and some light rain.
Storage, Pockets, Lid, Hydration
The SMD DayBreaker DayPack has an internal volume of 24L. It is a top loading drawstring closer with a 4L extension collar. This is more than enough space for my essentials, food, water, and extra layers.
There are two deep side pockets with a 2L volume. I easily fit two smart water water bottles in one pocket and usually put my bear spray and a pair of gloves in the other. These pockets are easily accessible without taking off the pack, but deep and secure that I do not worry about anything falling out.
There are two large shoulder strap pockets. These are great for things you need often and easily, like your cellphone, sunglasses, or personal locator beacon. I am able to put my iPhone XR in this pocket no problem.
The pack is complete with another three pockets. An interior small zippered pocket with a glove hook. A zippered pocket plus glove hook on the non-removable lid, which is perfect for my keys and wallet. The exterior front pocket made of the 4-way stretch material. This is where I usually slide in some snacks, but would also be a great place for a tablet, maps, or stuffing in a jacket.
There is a removable hydration bladder sleeve with dual hydration ports. I have not used this for a hydration bladder, but did keep it in as an extra pocket to put things in that I didn't want to dig for.
- 1" removable Hip Belt
- Eva Foam Sitpad Frame
- Daisy Chain
- Ice Axe Loop
- Whistle on Chest Strap
I bought my SMD DayBreaker DayPack in June 2020 and have been using it over the past few months for six hikes, ranging in length of 6km/4mi to 23km/14mi and a day bike trip. The pack has felt comfortable on my back and I have not felt restricted in my movement at all while hiking. The large side pockets are what I like most about this pack. It was something I knew I wanted in my pack and had difficulty finding in others I tried.
If you are searching for a simple, lightweight hiking backpack that is still durable and versatile for all of your outdoor adventures, the Six Moon Designs DayBreak DayPack is a great pick. At $120, this dependable and functional pack is a high value that I expect will last for many more adventures to come.
